In my opinion, the decision by the Republic of Uganda to upgrade its paper-based EAC e-passport to a polycarbonate version is a welcome move.
The upgrade not only enhances security features but also conforms to the standard requirements recommended by EAC and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), thereby minimizing the chances of damage to the passport.
Since its launch, over 1,008,401 e-passports have been issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. While both the e-paper and e-polycarbonate passports will continue to be used until expiry or leaflets run out, the polycarbonate passport offers enhanced resilience and robustness for data security and protection with strong anti-fraud features.
The upgraded EAC e-passport is suitable for use at e-gates for self-clearance, easy and automated issuance of boarding passes, and quick passenger processing worldwide (for ICAO member states).
It is also fully compliant with international security standards, making the traveler experience seamless and more convenient.
While the cost of the passports has remained unchanged since the introduction of the EAC e-passport, the Ministry of Internal Affairs advises the public to beware of conmen and unscrupulous individuals who charge extra and/or claim to offer much quicker services than standard protocols.
Online applications can be made at www.passports.go.ug or www.immigration.go.ug. It is important to note that paper-based e-passports remain valid until their expiry date or until the leaflets are finished. Going forward, new applicants will be issued with polycarbonate e-passports.
The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) reiterates its commitment to serving Ugandans and the public in general.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs encourages all Ugandans without passports to apply for the EAC e-passport and enjoy the enhanced features and services it offers.
In conclusion, the introduction of the polycarbonate e-passport by Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs is a positive step towards ensuring enhanced security features and a seamless traveller experience.
I encourage all Ugandans without passports to apply for the EAC e-passport and enjoy the enhanced features and services it offers.
